What is the purpose of the free consultation?

I offer a brief free consultation prior to arranging the first appointment. This is an opportunity for you to outline the difficulties that you are currently experiencing and hear how I may be able to help. It can be difficult to decide on a therapist based on their website alone, so it can also be helpful to get a sense of what I’m like as a person and a therapist.

What happens the first time we meet?

At the start of therapy, our task is to try and understand how your difficulties have started and what may be maintaining them. It is okay if you are not sure about this or can’t remember certain things. We do not have to discuss anything you are not comfortable sharing. The most important thing is that we talk about what you want to talk about, and you feel I am listening to you.

Do you offer any face to face therapy?

Yes, I have some availability in Central Cambridge on a Wednesday daytime.

What kind of therapist are you?

I have a doctorate in clinical psychology, and qualified in 2015. This means I am highly trained to draw on a number of psychological approaches, and tailor my approach to you. I often draw on cognitive analytic therapy, which combines ideas about the importance of early relationships and social influences with a practical, active, here-and-now approach.

My personality is of course also relevant – but that feels much harder to commit to writing! I would recommend booking a free consultation so that you can make your own assessment of this.

How do I know which therapy would be effective for me?

Clinical psychologists are trained to analyse and apply research evidence to their practice. After many decades of psychological research, it seems that the type, or “model,” of therapy, does not predict outcome. In other words, we can’t claim that one kind of therapy is more effective than another.

Instead, something called “therapeutic alliance” strongly predicts who benefits from therapy. This is a combination of: the relationship between the therapist and the client, and an agreement between them on the tasks, and goals, of therapy. So if you were my therapy client, it would be important that you feel positively towards me, that we agree about the purpose and end goal of the therapy, and that the things you do between and in sessions make sense to you. I prioritise seeking your feedback in these areas.

The good news is that if you meet up with a therapist, feel listened to and understood, and feel that their approach might help you - you are probably right! I recommend booking a free consultation, so that you can decide for yourself whether I am may be helpful for you.
